It is the hardest part of the whole day, at least for me. I know there are days where I am literally scared to get out of bed because I don't know how to cope. How will I deal with the rush hour traffic to work? How will I deal with that obnoxious coworker sitting next to me for 8 hours? And then after 8 hours, how will I deal with the rush hour traffic home from work?
But the thing is, if I can just get up, get dressed, and then get out the door, it feels great! I conquer the day. I deal with the junk, and I conquer the day.
I know this is how it goes every time, so why is it still so hard? Because just like it is hard for kids [and most adults] to justify making the bed if they are going to get back in it later that day, it is hard for people with depression and anxiety to justify even leaving the bed if you are going to get back in it later that day. It's the 'why bother' mindset, or maybe even the 'it's too scary' or 'it's too hard' mindset that keeps me from getting out of the bed.
The thing is, if getting up and going is half the battle, then that is exactly why I should do it. Because waking up is an accomplishment. Because my day will start with a success before I really even do anything, which will give me the boost I need to keep going for the rest of the day. Because it is an easy win, and I think easy wins are the best encouragement for day-to-day coping.
